Training time
With health issues resolved, it was time for the next step: behavior training "to program her energy." Weiner summoned Louise Goldsmith, who trains in Livingston under the banner "The Proper Pet." "I've used her services a lot," the vet said. "We have good communication with this trainer. I get feedback from clients who rave about her skills. Training doesn't take strength. It takes body language. Dogs need to be taught right from wrong. They want to please you," he said, echoing Wolcott.
Goldsmith's usual method is to visit a dog's home so that all family members learn to use the same signals. By necessity, in this case, her training was confined to the hospital setting. "In 30 minutes, she got Claire to sit and stay,and not run to the door if someone rang the bell or knocked. She's amazing," said Weiner.
